Hi,
Welcome to my blog! I've never done one of these before, but I'm hoping to do my blog all about tracing my family tree as well as some other thoughts on other interests of mine. We'll see!

About me

Amongst other things, I enjoy family history. My heritage is 3/4 British and 1/4 American. This blog is about my journey in exploring my roots, in particular my US roots as I know nothing about them. I was not surprised when I was first told, at the age of 10, that one of my Grandparents was American. I knew. I have definately inheirited those genes as I feel such a pull to the place. I have been using DNA testing to find clues and I am a member of the International Society of Genetic Genealogists (ISOGG).
I have put a few requests on here from relatives in tracking down friends or info on family members. I am also interested in learning languages and discovering cultures.

Top tips for getting the most out of your family tree!

Ask as many living relatives as you can-ask about relatives they remember
Look through old photos to jog people's memory, old bibles often have important dates such as baptisms, marriages and funerals.
Once you have names and dates, apply for relevant certificates-baptisms will give parents names and occupations, marriages give bride and groom's father's names, burials can give details of family members who registered the death.
Keep all information written down neatly-it's easy to get confused!
Subscribing to Ancestry.co.uk has census returns from 1841-1901 plus other records. Very useful, but there is a charge.
Free sites to use include Rootschat a free forum with experienced people to help, Freereg for free access to some parish entries and Freebmd to try and find when your ancestor was entered into the records for a baptism, marriage or death. Only available after 1837, but gives codes to apply for certificate. See useful links.
